Washington property owners get better protection against squatters

OLYMPIA, WASH. (AP) – Washington homeowners get better protection against squatters in a bill Governor Inslee signed into law.

Senator Hans Zeiger’s bill gives law enforcement clear authority to evict squatters.

“A property owner, on penalty of perjury, can make a declaration that there is a squatter or squatters on the property. That then allows for law enforcement to intervene and remove the squatters,” Zeiger says.

At that point they can bar them from ever returning to the property.
