OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington Senate has passed a measure that would move the state’s presidential primary from May to March.

The bill passed with a 29-18 vote Wednesday, and now heads to the House for consideration.

Senators Doug Ericksen of Ferndale and Keith Wagoner of Sedro-Woolley voted nay.

The measure would move the primary to the second Tuesday in March, and would require each party to determine which names are placed on the ballot for President representing the parties.

Secretary of State Kim Wyman applauded the the change, saying in a statement,  “Part of encouraging voters to participate is giving them a voice that matters, and the way you do that in the presidential election cycle is by holding the Primary before the nomination is a foregone conclusion.”
