SEATTLE, Wash. – With the upcoming long weekend, you may be tempted to travel across the sound, but officials are encouraging everyone to stay put if they can.

Washington State Ferries typically welcome about half a million riders over Memorial Day weekend.

This year, they are encouraging travelers to ride ferries for essential purposes only while Washington is under Governor Jay Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order.

A reduction in passengers traveling for recreation will allow frontline workers to safely social distance while on board.

WSF says they will enforce reduced occupancy on sailings if needed.
