OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington State residents were spending money in the second quarter of 2021 as taxable retail sales were up sharply both locally and statewide.
The State Department of Revenue reports statewide retail sales were up more than 33% from the second quarter of last year.
Construction spending was up 38% while sales of new and used cars increased by almost 50%.
Taxable retail sales in Whatcom County totaled $1.4 billion during the quarter and outperformed the state numbers with a 37% increase.
Sales were up by over 30% in Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Everson and Nooksack.
They increased about 25% in Lynden but ballooned in Sumas by 59%.
