OLYMPIA, WASH. – If the Legislature doesn’t act before the end of the session, some say the economy in rural Washington will be in trouble.

In a ruling out of Whatcom County, the State Supreme Court said you can’t use small wells in rural parts of our state without first proving they won’t impact users or wildlife downstream.

Zach Nutting hoped to build a new home for his pregnant wife and four kids.

“I don’t see how my children, the oldest being 9[-years-old] and the youngest coming soon, deserve to be homeless,” Nutting says.

Three bills aimed at easing the effects of that ruling on developers and would-be homeowners are still moving through the Legislature.

But Governor Jay Inslee says addressing the so called “Hirst Decision” is not a top priority this legislative session.
