WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – An alert KGMI listener saw a water spout northwest of Birch Bay Wednesday morning.
KOMO reports it was one of dozens reported in our area.
A water spout is a tornado that happens over open water.
Meteorologist Ted Buehner with the National Weather Service says they happened around 9 a.m..
He says water spouts or tornadoes are generated by thunderstorms and he says a brief storm did blow through the area this morning.
Buehner says water spouts can be a danger to boaters and if you see one you should note what direction it’s going, move aside and not try to out run it.
