NORTH BEND, Wash. — This weather pattern has skiers and snowboarders happy.
However, the chance for avalanche is rated considerable in the mountains of Whatcom and Skagit Counties.
The Mount Baker Ski Area reports two feet of new snow in the last 48 hours, bringing the base at Heather Meadows to 91 inches.
They’re expecting more snow today and tomorrow and then major snowfall measured in feet on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Northwest Avalanche Center issued a warning covering the west slopes of the Cascades from the Canadian Border to the Skagit River.
The Center says rain Tuesday followed by a freeze and over night snow will overload the snowpack and create dangerous conditions.
Backcountry travelers are advised to avoid avalanche terrain and slopes 35 degrees or greater.
