BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Western Washington University student hopes to go home from the hospital soon after she was hit by a car five weeks ago, causing a severe brain injury.

18-year-old Rebecca Chung told KOMO she was unconscious for three weeks and was very confused when she finally woke up. “I was pretty suicidal, because I thought I would wake up – I thought it was a dream,” Chung said.

On October 27, Chung stepped into the street from behind a parked vehicle and was hit. The driver was not issued an infraction or citation.

Chung doesn’t remember the accident and is focusing on her slow recovery. She has significant memory loss, needs a wheelchair to get around and has physical therapy six days a week.

Chung hopes to re-enroll in school in the spring.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $21,000 to help with Chung’s medical bills.
