BELLINGHAM, Wash – Some students at Western Washington University are concerned about campus safety.
Emily Gaston tells KING-5 about a serious situation in her dorm room.
“A convicted felon entered my room. When the police officers arrested him they arrested him standing in my room wearing my clothing.”
She says the university downplayed its seriousness.
“The Western Alert that was sent was something to the effect of ‘there is clothing being stolen in Highland (Hall).'”
Gaston’s incident is just one of several recent frightening episodes.
Vice President of Student Services Eileen Coughlin tells KING they’ve taken many steps to improve student safety.
“We’ve added staff and specialized personnel for sexual assault investigations, and we’ve updated our code of conduct,” Coughlin says.
She says they also increased required training for students, faculty and staff.
