GOOSEBERRY POINT, Wash. – Annual maintenance for the the Whatcom Chief ferry will be occurring a lot earlier this year.
The Whatcom County Public Works Department says the ferry, which takes vehicles and pedestrians from Gooseberry Point to Lummi Island, will be out of service May 6th through May 21st.
The department says that this work is typically done in the fall.
The U.S. Coast Guard mandated certain repairs at the end of last year’s maintenance period.
But the County says completing that work when it was first cited would have caused significant delays in ferry service.
Public Works says that the May 21st return to service date is tentative and still subject to change.
