WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Flooding now looks to be imminent along the Nooksack River in Whatcom County.
The Sheriff’s Department Division of Emergency Management says three or more inches of rain are expected to fall in the lowlands through Monday and as much as 6 to 8 inches is possible at higher elevations.
That will cause a surge of water through the Nooksack affecting communities and low lying areas along the river.
The cities of Everson, Nooksack and Sumas are warning residents that forecasts show they could see flooding similar to the Super Bowl flood of 2020 when the towns were inundated.
Flooding is expected to increase through the night and crest on Monday afternoon.
Volunteers are distributing sand bags at the Everson City Shop on Robinson Street and behind Sumas City Hall through Sunday afternoon.
People in flood-prone areas should prepare and have a “go-kit” with essentials ready in case they have to evacuate.
The mayors of Everson and Sumas are offering their contacts for anyone with questions or who may need assistance moving belongings or otherwise preparing.
Everson Mayor John Perry’s number is 360-815-5954 and Sumas Mayor Kyle Christensen can be reached at 360-594-1468.
Anyone in an emergency should call 911.
Some roads in Whatcom County are already closed in places due to water over the roadway, and drivers are warned to never try to drive through flooded roads.
More roads will likely be closed by Monday morning, impacting the morning commute.
You’re advised to give yourself extra time as many others will be using alternate routes.
