BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council has voted to move ahead with a controversial study of how far it can go in limiting fossil fuel exports from Cherry Point.
In March, the council extended a moratorium on the export of unrefined fossil fuels with members saying they’re concerned about safety, the environment and the impact exports would have on local refinery jobs.
Opponents say it’s an attack on industry at Cherry Point.
The Bellingham Herald reports that the council’s vote orders the prosecuting attorney’s office to find a firm with the expertise to guide the council on the issue.
