BELLINGHAM, Wash. – You have a chance to speak out about issues involving homelessness and fossil fuels at Tuesday night’s Whatcom County Council meeting.
The council will hold a public hearing on a six month extension of a moratorium on the export of unrefined fossil fuels and the expansion of facilities that would accommodate those exports from Cherry Point.
This would be the seventh extension of an emergency measure passed by the council in 2016 to give planners time to craft permanent rules.
Supporters of a moratorium say exporting unrefined fossil fuels would increase volatile shipments through the county and imperil local refinery jobs.
The council will also take public comment on a proposed ordinance establishing rules for temporary facilities or encampments for homeless people in unincorporated Whatcom County.
The council may vote on both measures at the meeting which starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9th.
