BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A new program has come to Whatcom County that encourages doctors to prescribe a day in the park.

The “Parkscriptions” pilot program started with five Whatcom County doctors last summer, with a goal to expand to 40 health care providers this year.

April Claxton, the Executive Director of Recreation Northwest, said the “parkscriptions” get more specific than a doctor just saying, “get more exercise.”

Claxton said program providers use a special website’s searchable location and amenity info on 160 parks across Whatcom County to tailor each “parkscription” to the needs of the patient.

Claxton said the local Park Rx program began with National Park Service programs throughout the country, following research showing that time outside was beneficial for health.

Doctors from Family Care Network’s Bellingham Bay Clinic and other providers are taking part in the program.
