OLYMPIA, Wash. — The State Department of Revenue says retail sales are up in the first quarter of 2018.

The state’s total taxable retail sales for the first quarter of 2018 increased by 10.3%, reaching $37.6 billion.

Whatcom County contributed just over $1 billion to that total, also a 10% increase from this time last year.

A jump in construction, lawn and garden, and equipment sales boosted taxable retail sales.

Construction rose 11.1% to $7.4 billion, and taxable retail sales by new and used car dealers rose 2.2% to $3.3 billion.

Kitsap and Skagit Counties saw the largest overall taxable retail sales percentage increase.
