BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The committee considering a proposal for a new jail in Whatcom County is ready to hear from the public.
The Whatcom County Stakeholder Advisory Committee has an online survey up and running, and will hold a townhall listening session in November.
County Council member Barry Buchanan says they went back to the drawing board after voters turned down the last proposal in 2017.
That led to the creation of the committee in 2019.
The pandemic put its work on hold until earlier this year, but they’ve now reached the point where they want public input.
They will consider what they hear as they formalize a needs assessment by early next year, then hammer out another jail proposal.
The hybrid listening session will be both in-person and virtual on November 15th.
The online survey is live now.
