BLAINE, Wash. — Are you ready for a shell of a good time?

Whatcom County Public Works is inviting the public to attend a celebration of the anniversary of the lifted shellfish harvesting restrictions in Blaine.

The second annual “Drayton Harbor Shellebration” includes free oyster samples, activities for kids, and awards presentations.

Organizers recommend dressing to stay warm and dry for the event, taking place from 4:00-6:00 PM at Blaine’s G Street Plaza on Friday, December 14.

Drayton Harbor used to be closed because of high levels of bacteria but efforts to improve water quality paid off, leading to the reopening for recreational shellfish harvesting in 2016.

Some of the improvement efforts included evaluation and repair of septic systems, consistent use of marina pump out stations, and investments in wastewater and stormwater management systems.
