BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Statistics show that both the number of people working in Whatcom County and the unemployment were up slightly in February.

The Employment Security Department reports there was an increase of about 500 local jobs over the previous month, countering the statewide trend.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate rose to an estimated 5.9% in February, up from 5.5% in January.

This unemployment rate was higher than the 5.6% we saw a year ago, despite the 5,000 being added to the local economy over the past year.
