WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – The Whatcom County Health Department is hoping to clear up confusion about how health privacy law aligns with vaccinations.

HIPAA stands for the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and outlines what information about your health can be shared.

Many have maintained that it prohibits businesses and other organizations from inquiring about a person’s vaccination status.

The Whatcom County Health Department says HIPAA does not prevent them from asking about your health information.

It also doesn’t prevent them from requiring vaccinations or masking.
