BELLINGHAM, Wash. — For the second time this year, a bat from Whatcom County tested positive for rabies.
The Whatcom County Health Department says bats are the primary carrier of the disease, and 3-10% submitted for testing in Washington have it.
Infection can occur when people are bitten by a rabid animal or have contact with their saliva.
The virus is often fatal when untreated, but is 100% preventable with prompt medical care.
The health department urges everyone to use caution and avoid bats.
Their tiny teeth mean bites can go unnoticed, so seek immediate medical attention if you think you have had contact.
