BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Almost 900 young people in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan Counties will have new career learning opportunities thanks to new federal funds.
The money will be distributed through the Governor’s Career Connect Washington Initiative and aimed at training young adults for careers in science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM.
Carla Conforto with the Northwest Workforce Council says it’s a hands-on training. “A big part of this is pushing apprenticeship, an ‘earn while you learn’ model,” Conforto said.
Nichols Brothers Boat Builders is just one of the companies that are expanding their apprentice programs.
Conforto said they’ll be reaching out through local high schools. For more information, go to http://www.nwboard.org/documents/NWC_PressRelease.pdf
