FERNDALE, Wash. – A Ferndale High School student has whooping cough.

The Whatcom County Health Department says students and staff who may have had contact with the teen were notified and are being urged to watch out for symptoms.

Whooping cough is highly contagious, and usually spreads through coughing or sneezing.

It can cause serious problems for babies.

The health department advises people to stay home from work or school and avoid contact with babies and pregnant women if they become sick with whooping cough.

Vaccinations for pertussis are a good defense for the illness.
