SALISH SEA, Wash. – You weren’t imagining things if you thought low tide on Wednesday, June 15th, was much lower than usual.
The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife says a wobble in the moon’s orbit is causing this week’s extremely low tides.
Tides are expected to be as much as 4-feet lower than usual, the lowest the Salish Sea has seen in 13 years.
Oceanographer Ian Miller tells KUOW that it’s great for beachcombers exploring tide pools, but is dangerous for vulnerable sea creatures that are rarely exposed to air.
High tides should be unusually high this week as well, but they are not expected to reach record levels.
