WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Officers from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s office and Ferndale Police Department arrested a wrong-way driver on I-5 in Whatcom County early Monday.
Sheriff Bill Elfo says witnesses saw the man driving south in the northbound lanes near Birch Bay Lynden Road at about 4:30 a.m.
He ignored officers’ numerous attempts to stop him, including flat tires after he drove over a spike strip.
A deputy used a technique to cause his car to spin out south of Ferndale and officers had to shoot out the back window with bean bag rounds before they could subdue and arrest 20 year old Alaska resident Jonathan Baird.
He didn’t show signs of intoxication at the scene.
He told officers he knew they were trying to stop him but he chose to ignore them.
