OLYMPIA, Wash. — As Washington construction ramps up, travelers are urged to use extra caution on the road.

Monday marked the beginning of National Work Zone Awareness Week to help raise public awareness of the need for everyone to slow down and pay attention around work zones.

The Washington Department of Transportation will be hosting ceremonies and public displays throughout the week, including the beat up remains of a transportation engineer’s work pickup truck that was hit by a negligent driver while he was sampling soil nearby.

WSDOT says there were over 1,000 work zone collisions in 2018, citing inattention as the top cause.

They advise travelers to slow down, be kind, pay attention and be calm.
