MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Tulips are beginning to bloom in Skagit Valley, bringing heavy traffic to the area.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs the entire month of April and the Department of Transportation says travelers should expect peak festival traffic on weekends.

Travelers often take I-5 to exit 226 at Kincaid Street for the most direct route to the tulips, which cuts through the heart of Mount Vernon and causes heavy congestion.

They suggest an alternate route, taking Exit 230 in Burlington for those headed south on I-5 or Exit 221 in Conway for northbound travelers.
