OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – If you were one of the people whose personal data was compromised when a Washington State University hard drive was stolen, you can get free credit monitoring from the university.
That’s part of the costly response to the breach.
WSU is being forced to spend $150,000 to reach out and protect more than a million people who had social security numbers and other information on the hard drive.
The Seattle Times reports that’s the deductible for the university’s insurance policy for breaches, so the actual costs will be hundreds of thousands of dollars more.
The hard drive was in a safe that was stolen from an Olympia self-storage locker on April 21st.
