GEDEO REGION, Ethiopia – Researchers from Washington State University helped make a big archaeological discovery in Ethiopia recently.

The team used radiocarbon dating to determine a well-known monolithic site in the southern part of the country is actually 1,000 years older than previously thought.

Currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status, the Sakaro Sodo site is home to the largest number of megalithic stele monuments in Africa.

The current political situation in the war-torn country, along with pandemic restrictions, makes further near-term analysis of the site difficult.

But WSU does have more projects planned for the area with colleagues at Addis Ababa University and the Ethiopian Department of Archaeology.
