WTA receives $2.3 million grant for electric buses

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Thanks to a federal grant, more electric buses will hit Bellingham streets in 2020.

The Whatcom Transportation Authority announced the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded them a $2.3 million “Low- or No-Emission grant.”

The money will cover a majority of the cost to purchase two electric buses and charging facilities, which WTA expects will enter service in 2020.

The agency says one electric bus will reduce their CO2 emissions by 1100 tons and fuel use by 100,000 gallons throughout its 12-year service life.

WTA is one of fifty-two agencies nationwide to receive funding through the Low-No program, which is distributing over $84 million nationwide this year.
