WWU MEN’S GOLF FINISHES 4TH AT CONCORDIA INVITATIONAL
PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Washington University golfers Cody Roth, Ethan Casto and Brody Bonfilio all finished in the top 5 to lead the Vikings to a 4th-place finish at the Concordia Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
WWU slipped one spot on the team leaderboard after entering the day in 3rd place, carding a final round 14-over-par 298. The Vikings finished the 54-hole tournament at 28-over-par (876), four strokes back of 3rd-place Simon Fraser and 11 strokes behind 2nd-place and tournament host Concordia. The University of British Columbia edged Concordia for the team trophy with a tournament score of 16-over-par 868.
Roth (Jr., Bellingham, WA) led the Vikings finishing in 3rd place at 4-over-par 271 for the tournament. The junior carded rounds of 69 (-2), 75 (+4) and 73 (+2) for his highest finish as a Viking. He was one stroke behind 2nd-place finisher Isaac Hall of Concordia and four strokes behind tournament champion Chris Crisologo out of Simon Fraser.
Casto (So., Snohomish, WA) and Bonfilio (Fr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) tied for 4th place in the 60-player field at 5-over-par 218. Casto carded a final-round 3-over-par 74 for his highest career finish. Bonfilio continued the torrid start to his collegiate career with a second top 10 finish, recording a final-round 4-over-par 75 on Tuesday. In two collegiate tournaments, Bonfilio has placed 6th (WWU Invitational) and tied for 4th.
Freshman Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) and senior Willy Scholten (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) tied for 31st place at 16-over-par 229.
The Vikings close out the fall season next week with the Otter Fall Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at Bayonet & Black Horse in Seaside, Calif.
WOMEN’S GOLF MOVES UP TO FINISH 6TH AT WWU INVITATIONAL
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women’s golf team closed out the fall portion of its schedule finishing in 6th place at the 2017 WWU Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
The Vikings had a 15-stoke improvement from Monday’s first round, turning in a 21-over-par 313 on Tuesday to move up two spots on the leaderboard and finish the tournament at 57-over-par (641). WWU started play Tuesday in 8th place in the 13-team tournament, but had a strong final round to complete the fall season.
Senior Jenn Paul (Bellingham, WA) turned in her best performance of the season, carding a 1-over-par 74 to tie for 16th place in the 72-player field. Paul recorded 4 birdies and 9 pars in her final round to move up from 35th place to open the round.
“We had one of our best rounds of the fall, and that is a positive way to head into the offseason,” said head coach Bo Stephan. “I thought Jenn Paul played really well and proud of how she battled out there. She was smart on the course and had a tremendous round to finish at 1-over-par.”
Junior Stephanie Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) turned in another top 25 performance tying for 23rd place at 13-over-par (159), shooting a 4-over-par 77 in the final round.
Hannah Drake (T32nd, +16) and Annie Leete (T37th, +18) rounded out the Western players to finish in the top 40 of the tournament.
California Baptist recorded a five-stroke victory over the University of British Columbia to earn team medalist honors, finishing the 36-hole tournament at 14-over-par 598. Yu Ling Lee shot a 3-under-par 70 in the final round to finish at -1 for the tournament (145) to take home individual medalist honors.
