SEASIDE, Calif. – The Western Washington University men’s golf team completed the fall season with an 11th-place finish at the Otter Invitational played Monday and Tuesday on the Blackhorse Golf Course of Bayonet & Blackhorse.
The Vikings shot their best round of the two-day tournament on Tuesday with a third-round team score of 3-over-par 291. Tournament host Cal State Monterey Bay won the 19-team tournament with a three-round score of 8-under-par 856, sealing the victory with a scorching final round total of 14-under-par 274.
Senior Adam Barker (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula/Olympic College) led WWU finishing in a tie for 7th place in the 104-player field at -1 215 for the tournament. Barker shot rounds of 69 (-3), 75 (+3) and 71 (-1) on the par 72 layout. He carded 13 birdies over the 54 holes of the tournament, tied for 5th-most in the field.
Junior Michael Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) bounced back from a tough first round to shoot 1-over-par for the final 36 holes, finishing in a tie for 26th place at 6-over-par 222. Junior Cody Roth (Bellingham, WA) and freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) tied for 75th at +17 (233) and sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) tied for 81st at +18 (234).
UC San Diego sophomore Adam Navigato recorded a seven-stroke victory for individual medalist honors, taming the course with a three-round total of 17-under-par 199. Navigato fired a first-round 3-under-par 69, and then had back-to-back 7-under-par 65s to win the tournament. Monterey Bay’s Elis Svard was 2nd at -10 for the tournament (206) and Simon Fraser’s Chris Crisologo was 3rd at -5 (211).
With the fall season completed, the Vikings return to competition Feb. 26-27, 2018 with the Bay Area Invitational played at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, Calif. WWU will add one more tournament to the spring schedule for a total of four tournaments, before the GNAC Championships that will be played April 23-24 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
