The scheduled neutral-site game between the top-ranked Western Washington University women’s soccer team and Cal State Los Angeles set for Wednesday has been cancelled and abandoned due to air quality concerns without a reschedule date.

The game was set to be played at Terry Fox Field on the campus of Simon Fraser University with an 11 a.m. start time in Burnaby, British Columbia, before a game-time decision was made to cancel the contest due to air quality concerns. Forest fires burning throughout the region have negatively impacted air quality and the safety of outdoor sports activities.

The cancellation of Wednesday’s game between WWU and Cal State LA joins a list of events involving Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools that have been either cancelled, relocated or rescheduled due to air quality concerns from forest fires burning throughout the Pacific Northwest. As of 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, seven scheduled events involving GNAC schools have been impacted by air quality concerns.

The No.1-ranked Vikings are 2-0-0 after a season-opening trip to California and continue the non-conference schedule with a pair of games in Colorado next Sunday and Wednesday. WWU travels to face MSU Denver on Sunday, Sept .10 (12 pm MT) and Colorado State-Pueblo on Wednesday, Sept. 13 (12 pm MT). Following the trip to Colorado, the Vikings will begin the GNAC schedule in Bellingham with games against Western Oregon (Sept. 16, 4 pm) and Simon Fraser (Sept. 21, 7 pm).
