
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior Shearyna Labasan has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office Portland, Ore.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) earned the award by going 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA (5 ER, 14.0 IP) to help lead the Vikings to a 3-1 home conference series win over Northwest Nazarene. Labasan scattered 13 hits in her pair of starts in the circle, striking out 6 and walking only 2 batters. She also batted .400 (4-for-10) with 2 runs scored, 3 walks and one double at the plate.
In her second start vs. NNU, Labasan had a perfect game through the first 5.2 innings before allowing a single and home run. She kept the Nighthawks scoreless over the final inning, setting up WWU’s walk-off victory to clinch the series win at Viking Field.
For the season, Labasan is 4-3 with a 4.07 ERA (25 ER, 43.0 IP) and 31 strikeouts, ranking 9th in the GNAC in ERA, 6th in strikeouts, tied for 3rd in wins and 6th in innings pitched. She has won her last four decisions, going 4-0 with a 3.35 ERA (11 ER, 23.0 IP) and 3 complete games.
The weekly award was the second for Labasan in her career, also earning the weekly honor during her freshman season (Feb. 29-March 6, 2016).
After dropping the first 7 games of the season, WWU has won 6 of its last 8 games to improve to 6-9 overall and sits atop the early GNAC standings at 3-2 in league play.
WWU remains at home this weekend hosting Western Oregon (Saturday) and Concordia (Sunday) in GNAC doubleheaders that begin at noon each day at Viking Field.
