OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state health department yesterday reported high mask wearing in Yakima, coupled with lower transmissions.

In their Wednesday briefing, the joint information center said that 95% of people in Yakima are wearing a face covering in public and that Yakima County is the only place in the state right now where each person who gets COVID-19 on average spreads it to less than one other person.

In Whatcom County, six new infections were reported yesterday for the period ending Tuesday at midnight, and no new deaths.

The state’s data dashboard shows over half of the coronavirus deaths in Whatcom County to date have been in people 80 and over. 1% of the reported deaths have been for persons 39 and younger.

As of this morning, Whatcom County is passing on one of five risk assessment metrics, percent of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, which has increased to 3.5%.
