MOUNT BAKER, Wash. — A hiker died Thursday after falling about ninety feet while climbing the Park Butte lookout structure, south of Mount Baker.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says just before 9:00 Thursday night they got reports of a man in his 20’s who was severely injured, unconscious and having difficulty breathing.
Whidbey Naval Search and Rescue medics were training nearby and airlifted the severely injured hiker with intention of taking him to Harborview Medical Center, but he died while en route.
Deputies are talking with the hiking party to determine exactly what happened, and plan to release more information, including the man’s identity on Monday.
