MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A black bear that came to be known as the “Island Hopping Bear” got plenty of exercise before he was captured Saturday in Mount Vernon.
The Mount Vernon Police Department says they responded to reports early that morning of a black bear on E. College Way, and further calls followed the bear going south and climbing up into a tree.
Department of Fish & Wildlife officers safely tranquilized the bear and caught him in a tarp as he fell from the tree.
He was set to be released in the wild later that day.
Officers believe this was the same bear seen in Island, San Juan and Skagit Counties due to markings on his fur.
