BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham City Council waded into the national debate over abortion rights by passing a resolution affirming womens’ full access to health care, including abortion services.
The vote came after people advocated for both sides of the issue during a vigorous public comment period.
Councilmember Terry Bornemann said he supported the resolution because he’s attended recent rallies in Bellingham where women echoed the calls he heard in the 1970’s.
Councilmember Gene Knutson said the debate has been fired up not only by anti-abortion laws, but also by what he calls an extreme pro-abortion measure passed in New York.
“I will be voting no for my own personal reasons . . . but I am happy that we can have a conversation among councilmembers and among the community without getting upset,” he said.
The resolution passed 6-1 at Monday night’s meeting, the full agenda of which can be seen here.
