PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Dozens of people came together in Port Angeles to remember a woman and her three children who perished in a fire over the weekend, while prosecutors consider charges against the woman’s husband.

Friend Jessica Hernandez spoke to KOMO about Valerie Kambeitz and her three young children: Lilly, Emma and Jayden.

“It’s just hard to understand that that anybody would ever want to hurt somebody as gentle and sweet and tender as her, and those little babies,” she said.

Bail was set at $5 million for Matthew Timothy Wetherington, whom police say was seen running from the burning mobile home early Saturday.

He and Kambeitz were married in May.

Port Angeles Police say Wetherington told them he loved his wife and kids and didn’t know how he could do something like this.
