ROCKPORT, Wash. — The North Cascades Highway is opening early this year.

WSDOT crews will swing open the highway’s gates for the season at 9 AM this Thursday — the earliest opening since 2015.

During an assessment trip in March before crews cleared the pass, avalanche and maintenance staff found roughly four feet less snow than last year.

The scenic North Cascades highway provides another route between the western and eastern part of the state as well as access to several hiking trailheads and campgrounds.
