BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham man accused of physically and verbally attacking his Uber driver last week is charged with a hate crime.

The Sikh Coalition issued a release Wednesday commending the Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and Bellingham Police Department for recognizing bias and bringing hate crime charges in the case.

Bellingham Police say 22-year-old suspect Grifin Sayers attempted to strangle his Uber driver Thursday on Barkley Boulevard while shouting racially-biased comments about his skin color, Indian descent and the turban he was wearing.

Sayers is scheduled for arraignment on Friday.
